Ion alfvén velocity fluctuations and implications for the diffusion of streaming cosmic rays

چکیده
The interstellar medium (ISM) of star-forming galaxies is magnetized and turbulent. Cosmic rays (CRs) propagate through it, those with energies from ? GeV ? TeV are likely subject to the streaming instability, whereby wave damping processes balances excitation resonant ionic Alfvén waves by CRs, reaching an equilibrium in which propagation speed CRs very close local ion velocity. transport therefore sensitive velocity fluctuations. In this paper we systematically study these fluctuations using a large ensemble compressible MHD turbulence simulations. We show that for sub-Alfvénic turbulence, as applies strongly ISM, probability density function (PDF) determined solely shocked gas forming parallel magnetic field, develop analytical models PDF up second moments. For super-Alfvénic correlated complex ways, correlations well contributions sets PDF. discuss implications findings underlying “macroscopic” diffusion mechanisms undergoing including modeling macroscopic coefficient plasmas. also describe how, highly-magnetized turbulent gas, PDF, hence column can be used access information about structure observations ISM.

Fractional diffusion of cosmic rays
We consider the propagation of galactic cosmic rays under assumption that the interstellar medium is a fractal one. An anomalous diffusion equation in terms of fractional derivatives is used to describe of cosmic ray propagation. The anomaly in used model results from large free paths (" Lévy flights ") of particles between galactic inhomogeneities and long time a particle stays in a trap. An a...
متن کاملImplications of multiply-charged anomalous cosmic rays
During the acceleration of anomalous cosmic rays (ACRs) some singly-charged ions are stripped of additional electrons. The resulting multiply-charged ions are accelerated more efficiently, and most ACRs with ≥30 MeV/nuc are multiply-charged. This paper considers some implications of multiply-charged ACRs, including limits that they place on the time scales for ACR acceleration and transport, an...
متن کاملSpatial Origin of Galactic Cosmic Rays in Diffusion Models: II- Exotic Primary Cosmic Rays
In a companion paper, we investigated the question of the spatial origin of the cosmic rays detected in the Solar neighborhood, in the case of standard sources located in the Galactic disk. There are some reasons to believe that there may also be a large number of sources located in the halo, for example if the Galactic dark matter is made of supersymmetric particles or if Primordial Black Hole...
متن کاملDetailed analysis of observed antiprotons in cosmic rays
In the present work, the origin of antiprotons observed in cosmic rays (above the atmosphere) is analyzed in details. We have considered the origin of the primaries, (which their interactions with the interstellar medium is one of the most important sources of antiprotons) is a supernova type II then used a diffusion model for their propagation. We have used the latest parameterization for anti...
متن کامل24 . Cosmic rays 1 24 . COSMIC RAYS
The cosmic radiation incident at the top of the terrestrial atmosphere includes all stable charged particles and nuclei with lifetimes of order 106 years or longer. Technically, “primary” cosmic rays are those particles accelerated at astrophysical sources and “secondaries” are those particles produced in interaction of the primaries with interstellar gas. Thus electrons, protons and helium, as...
